Measuring the success of EX-focused workplace strategies

In many respects, this has been a defining year for the workplace. For some organizations, changes and strategies that were in progress before the onset of the pandemic have been expedited. For others, there’s been a rapid shift to new ways of working.

Employee wellbeing and improving the employee experience (EX) are the top areas of focus for workplace strategy, according to the 2020 Intelligence Workplace Report. They’re recognized as key to creating a positive organizational culture and achieving business outcomes – which explains why 86.6% of organizations say the future workplace will be designed around employee enablement.

As you move forward with strategies and policies that define where and how people work, and create a culture that enables agility and growth, data and analytics will be critical to measuring your success in two key areas: EX and wellbeing, and productivity.

Our findings show that 62.0% of organizations measure EX via employee surveys and 52.0% use discussion forums. While these do have value, tools such as sentiment analysis are more effective in providing a real-time indicator of where people are at, and where you may need to step in to provide support.

Take remote working as an example. The report shows 79.3% of organizations agree home-working during the pandemic was challenging for employees. Could the immediate benefits of remote working – productivity, business continuity and employee wellbeing – be at risk because people are now working longer hours? If you’re able to recognize the warning signs early, you’ll be better positioned to address them effectively.

In addition to analytics that indicate how wellbeing and EX could impact on individual productivity, there’s an opportunity to use data to see how teams have worked together to enable successful business outcomes.

Has a product team consistently delivered new products to market on time? Analytics can help you visualize how they collaborated and managed content – and provide insight for establishing best practices and workflows that can be applied in other areas of the organization.

Once you’ve determined the data and analytics you’ll be using to measure the impact of workplace strategies on your organization’s culture and performance, it’s important to continually communicate the how and why to your employees. They don’t want to think their every move is being monitored, or that they have to ‘clock in’ to prove they’re working.
